Are you interested in photography but the technical aspects seem too abstract to you? This article is for you! Three one-minute videos to understand aperture, speed and learn how to use these parameters to take successful photos.
Before going into the purely practical part, I will focus on the theory. I think it is important to understand how the parameters work, without going into physical principles or mathematical calculations, so that I can then be able to choose how they will influence the picture.
A perfect exposure is when you can do what you want, and in 90% of the cases, it will be a question of having a photo that is neither too light nor too dark. (I’m not going to start confusing you right now with the exceptions!).
To do this, we’re going to play with three parameters: aperture, speed and ISOs. The third being the one that interests me the least, I’ll start with it: the ISOs correspond to the sensitivity of your sensor. The higher they are, the brighter the rendering will be. This is a setting that will interest you especially in dark places where you can’t help but increase the ISOs.
As a side effect, raising the ISOs increases the noise (those ugly little pixels you see especially in dark areas). This noise can be attenuated by software, but you will still be advised to stay on low ISOs as much as possible. Do the test with your camera, but on a small entry-level SLR, I only go up to 1600 if absolutely necessary, and I usually stay between 200 and 400 for daytime outdoor photography.
Let us now turn our attention to the opening. This refers to the amount of light that will reach the sensor.
It can be adjusted on the body (apart from a few rare manual lenses) but will be limited by the lens: not all lenses allow large apertures. This is the number that is given next to the focal length indications. For example, a 24-70 2.8 is a zoom that goes from 24mm to 70mm and opens to 2.8. The diaphragm is located in the lens, it determines the size of the hole to let the light pass through (not to be confused with the shutter).
The small trap is that this 2.8 is actually a fraction: 1/2.8, which means that the smaller the number, the larger the aperture. So a 50mm 1.4 is brighter than a 50mm 1.8.
The aperture will therefore be large on two points. On the one hand, the wider you open, the less time you need to open. That is to say that for the same exposure, I can choose between letting in a lot of light, or letting it in for a long time. We’ll see in the section on speed what effects this can have on the image. On the other hand, it is the aperture that will determine the “blur”.
The shutter speed is the time from the time you shoot to the time the shutter closes. Specifically, it is the time during which the sensor is exposed to light.
These are issues that today require us to change our ways of consuming. The printing sector is not to be outdone! With the advent of the Internet, some companies are choosing to dematerialise all their publications. However, this practice is now being called into question. Printteam will try to answer you on the particular case of the catalogue: E-catalogue or paper catalogue, which pollutes the least?
The paper catalogue is in a way the showcase of a company. Indeed, we find all the offers, all the products, all the services that a company offers to its customers and prospects. This commercial or institutional brochure is all the more important as it also conveys the company’s identity and transmits its values.
It is essential that the catalogue is printed in a qualitative manner, as this is usually a support that companies produce once or twice a year. By qualitative, we mean that the medium must be durable, well thought out and adapted to its use, while being original to attract and retain the attention of prospects. This is why Printteam recommends that, when printing brochures or catalogues, its customers choose a quality ecological paper for the inside pages to enhance the appearance of the products, and a suitable finishing such as a laminated cardboard cover or a binding in metal point, glued square back or spiral binding (wire’o).
Besides, it is clear that paper is worth a thousand hard disks! In the long run, it is safer to archive a paper catalogue than to store data on a disk that requires power each time it is consulted and is at risk of being hacked, deleted or broken down.
Several studies have shown that it is ergonomically more enjoyable to read a brochure, catalogue or book on paper rather than on a screen. The printed images and the feel of the paper make the paper catalogue closer to your image and the overall view of the information clearer for your Customer. In recent years, more and more professional printers like Printteam have been turning to methods that generate less environmental impact. This involves grouping (amalgamating) several covers on the same wedge in order to reduce the number of aluminium plates and the number of sheets lost during colour density setting, using machines that consume less energy such as the LED UV printing press, having paper produced in an optimised format or recommending standard formats to limit paper waste to the strict technical minimum, using paper that complies with FSC, PEFC and recycled environmental standards.
The printing and production of catalogues or other communication media requires steps that have an impact on the ecology. Every year, we are talking about more than twenty million trees cut down to produce paper, not to mention the use of inks and varnishes that are said to be toxic for the environment, and the release of CO2 due to the energy used to bleach, print and transport the paper. Nevertheless, printers and paper industries are looking for alternatives to reduce their impact on the environment. We will see this in an upcoming Printteam news item.
Furthermore, when we analyse the life cycle of paper and digital data storage equipment, we find that recycling paper is much more environmentally friendly than the end-of-life of electronic components. So we could ask ourselves the question, is it really legitimate to privilege the digital e-catalogue over the ancestral but nevertheless contemporary paper catalogue?
Unlike the paper catalogue, the e-catalogue can be sent endlessly by email. Thus for commercial prospecting, it can be interesting to use it for mass mailing, as it is less expensive for a company to launch an e-mailing campaign with the e-catalogue as an attachment rather than sending the paper catalogue by post.
But is this really the most relevant method for reaching your target audience?
The e-catalogue: can be consulted anywhere and at any time
An e-catalogue can be consulted anywhere and at any time from a simple internet connection. It is also easier to search a catalogue in a digital version than in a paper version.
As mentioned earlier, sending your e-catalogue digitally or routing your paper catalogue by post certainly does not have the same cost, but the commercial efficiency will not be the same either.
Several reports have shown that during the prospection phase, a paper catalogue will have a commercial impact 3 to 4 times greater than that of an e-catalogue.
You may not realise it yet, but every time you open your e-catalogue, download, store or even send it by email, you consume energy. Unlike the paper catalogue, which, once printed, can be consulted an unlimited number of times without any additional impact on the environment.
As mentioned above, digital technology requires electronic components that require the use of energy throughout their lifecycle (manufacture and use) and are highly polluting at the end of their life cycle.
It is therefore clear today that we have the wrong idea about dematerialisation vs. paper: the e-catalogue is no more environmentally friendly than the paper catalogue!
In addition to the difficulty of recycling electronic equipment, the trend towards hyperconsumption and programmed obsolescence leads us to change our electronic devices on average every 18 months. Despite the efforts of manufacturers to develop more efficient devices, the steps taken to recycle responsibly are still very limited compared to paper.

When it comes to communication, the small print often makes all the difference: some attractive advertising offers become much less attractive when you read the terms and conditions of sale.
However, there is no such thing as a “coup-fourréré” today, since we are talking about the eco-signature, which is sometimes accompanied by a logo that can be found on various printed media and which serves to highlight a company’s efforts in terms of responsible communication.
Depending on the labels they have, your printer may offer to insert the logos of these labels on your documents along with a mention.
Today, we invite you to find out more about this unusual “paper” which represents a real novelty in the world of printing. To do so, we have asked our experts for their opinion but also carried out some tests at the agency to really go further than the simple presentation of “Stone Paper”. Resistance, printing, resistance… we compared the performance of “normal” paper (left) with a similar weight to the stone paper used (right).
It’s already a nice name that has a very “friendly” side to it and that somehow marks the change from its predecessors whose names are sometimes a little rough and cold. It’s also a paper distributed by people from Brittany and for us from Nantes it’s important! However, the technique comes from Taiwan and it is Pascal Parmentier who, near Quimper, decided to develop his start-up around this project.
Paper is a resource that requires a phenomenal amount of water for its creation. It is estimated that it takes 500 litres of water and 2 to 3 kilos of wood to make 1 kg of paper. To be as accurate as possible, “normal” paper is pulp (water and fibres), mineral fillers (marble/calcium carbonate and kaolin) and glues (alum and rosin). Paper is also bleached with chlorine or derivatives, which is an extremely polluting product.
Stone paper claims to be a paper that is created from waste! Recovered on building sites, these are simply stones coming straight from the construction industry! Another part comes from quarries and the whole thing is crushed until a powder is obtained, a bit like talcum powder. It is calcium carbonate which is an element that is mainly found in limestone rocks (tuffeau, faluns). These rocks are very friable, erode easily and are present in large quantities in nature.
Moreover, the calcium carbonate that composes it makes it naturally white, so there is no need for bleach. In addition to this powder, a non-toxic polypropylene resin binds it together. The only use of water is for cooling the machines, so it is in a closed circuit and is constantly recycled and reused.
The mineral paper thus claims not to release any toxic product when burnt and would decompose by itself under the effect of light. The sheet decomposes, gradually resembling an eggshell, the resin is absorbed by the atmosphere without any harmful effects, the CaCO3 degrades and returns to a powdery state (we didn’t have time to test so we’ll take their word for it).
Of course, we can only encourage the reduction of paper consumption by using it in a reasoned way. Because producing paper has an environmental cost, printing it has another, recycling it has yet another.
The sheet of stone is a bit like Yupo (plastic) – even if the composition is not the same – it can give you an idea of its resistance as well as its aspect! There are several little things…
The first is that the paper is not folded properly. Indeed, like plastic, it tries to return to its original shape. With cellulosic paper, it is thanks to the broken fibres that a fold remains in place. Often, however, the paper is cracked after folding. This is not the case here as the fibre is replaced by powder. Stone paper, on the other hand, tends to deform without cracking or tearing. It is almost “tear-proof”, in fact, it becomes brittle as soon as a small cut is made, but it deforms well before it really “cracks”. Afterwards, on the other hand, it can be cut very well and cleanly. It is also extremely pleasant to cut with scissors.
It’s not that we were afraid of reprisals after all that, but it’s a real argument from the stone-paper company to say that this paper doesn’t cut! And indeed Hervé, our faithful printer, confirms that it often happens to get hurt. We wanted to see that and as we didn’t dare on our fingers (because it still hurts a lot) we decided to take an eraser. To be honest, the sheet of stone cut it but more under pressure than by cutting, whereas normal paper really cut the head off our eraser.
